The purpose of the Online Student Orientation (OSO) and Support Services is to increase the success of students in online degree programs and reduce the attrition rate of online students via the following objectives:
  1. Provide students with a proper introduction to the program to help students set the proper expectations for their time in the program
  2. Providing participants of the OSO with training on how to be a successful online student (such as time management skills, note-taking skills, and proper use of educational technology)
  3. Provide students with the support resources necessary to succeed in the program (including technical assistance, degree plan advisor, financial aid information, software, and application access)
  4. Provide a sense of community for learners, including a shared onboarding experience, increased opportunities to speak with professors, peers, and access to virtual online social clubs
  5. Provide a constant resource (the completed OSO), which the students can access via a shared online portal (the Canvas learning management system) throughout their time at the university, requiring check-in points throughout their program
